Sri Raghavendra Vijaya

Sri Raghavendra stands out as the brightest star in the long list of saints of Madhva hagiology. He occupies a prominent and significant status in the galaxy of the Swamijis. His popularity is incredible. He is alike loved and adored by one and all. He is the favourite of the masses and the scholars alike. His admirers and disciples are not confined to any caste or sex or sect or any part of the country. It is not a boast, when we state that the largest number of Brindavans are of Sri Raghvendra scattered all over India from Badri to Kanyakumari, from Kutch to Assam. Sri Raghavendra is known for many things and is the complex of several excellences. His greatness is unsurpassable (agamyamahima), his compassion for suffering humanity is infinite (atyantadaya) and his popularity is astounding and breath-taking (visesajanapriti). Added to all these he is a reputed scholar with a substantial output of 42 works to his credit (prakanda pandita).

One has only to turn to the pages of Raghavendra Vijaya of Narayanacharya, the saint’s sister’s son and the Guruganastava of Vadindra to learn about the marvels he worked. He had great yogic powers.

Rayara Stotra And Mangalashtaka

If you are a devotee of Shri Rayaru, there is no doubt you will know this song. Appanacharya as we all know, was the greatest disciple and also was very close to Sri Raghavendra Swami. At the time that Raghavendra Swami entered Brindavan, he was on the other side of the river Tungabhadra. Appanacharya wanted to be with his revered guru, but the river was flooding. He jumped into the Tungabhadra, singing Sri Poornabhodha stotra, realizing that if Raghavendra Swami could lead him across the ocean of samsara, a mere river could not hold him back. And he did cross the river safely, only to see that Raghavendra Swami had already entered Brindavan.

Appanacharya was in such a profound state of grief, that he could not finish the stotra he had started to compose-it was missing 7 aksharas. These final 7 aksharas came from inside the Brindavan. Not only did this show that Appanacharya’s Sri Poornabhodha had Raghavendra Swami’s approval, but it also showed that Raghavendra Swami was still with them. This was the first miracle he showed after entering Brindavan, and even today miracles happen to people who go to Mantralaya Brindavan to seek his blessings.

Lakshmi Shobhane

Once when Sri Vadiraja Swamy was touring South India, he reached Kumbhakonam in what is now Tamil Nadu. There, he was staying in the house of an Acharya for a few days. During his stay, he had defeated many scholars of other schools of philosophy and had made them accept the philosophy of Sri Madhvacharya.
The owner of the place where he was staying had a son whose marriage had got fixed after a long search for a good bride. The parents of the boy had requested Sri Vadiraja Swamy to attend the marriage and bless the couple, to which Sri Swamiji had agreed.

On the day of the marriage, when the rituals were on in full swing, the groom suddenly collapsed on the floor. Within minutes, he was frothing and shivering and ended up motionless. People realized that a small, but poisonous, snake had creeped into the head gear that the groom was wearing. The snake had bit him right on the temple causing instant poisoning.
The local doctor was called in and the groom was pronounced as dead. Some local tantriks were also put to service, but to no avail. People were getting ready to take the body away for cremation.
The father of the groom rushed to Sri Vadiraja Swamy who had not yet arrived at the marriage venue. Sri Swamiji instantly was able to relate to the chain of events. He told the people gathered there that there had been an uneasiness in him since three days and he had realized that something untoward would occur during the marriage. On the morning of that day, at Brahmi Muhurtha (around 4:30AM), he had composed a song in Kannada on Mahalakshmi and Vishnu. The song was about Lakshmi’s marriage to Vishnu during the Samudra Mathana episode (churning of the ocean for Amruta).
Sri Swamiji meditated for a while on his favorite form of Vishnu – Hayavadana – and realized that the groom had an untimely death and that there was still life in the body. He rushed to the venue immediately. There, he sprinked some “Theertha” (holy water) on the body and also some “Mantrakshate”. He sat down there and started singing the newly composed Lakshmi Shobhane song. Lo and behold! Just as the song was to complete, the groom sat up as if he had just got up from deep sleep!
The Lakshmi Shobhane song is one of the most auspicious songs in the Kannada language. Even today, nearly 500 years after its composition, it is sung in almost every wedding in Karnataka. In Tulu Nadu, ladies sing this almost daily during their evening prayers. It is an extremely melodious song with 112 verses in it.

Sumadhwa Vijaya

Madhwa Vijaya or the "The story of the victory of Madhwa" is a biography of the great Dvaita philosopher Sri Madhwacharya. It is authored by Sri Narayana Panditacharya, who was the son of Sri Trivikrama Panditacharya, one of the direct disciples of Madhwacharya. Sri Trivikrama Panditacharya was a famous advaita exponent of his time and converted himself to the Madhwa faith after disputation with Sri Madhwacharya himself for 7-8 days in Kasargod of Kerala. He is also the author of the famous "Vayu Stuti" which is recited by all Madhva devotees , daily, till date.

MadhwaVijaya is a Sanskrit work and is composed of 16 sargas or cantos. It starts with a description of the first two avatars of Vayu, namely Hanuman and Bhima. It then proceeds to describe the life of Sri Madhwa, who is considered the third avatar. MadhwaVijaya contains detailed descriptions of various incidents of Sri Madhwa's life and is the only authentic source of information about Madhwacharya that exists. Sri Narayana Panditacharya was a contemporary of Sri Madhwa which greatly adds to the authenticity of the work. The work contains many personal and intimate details of Sri Madhwacharya's daily routine[1].

MadhwaVijaya is a Maha Kavya and its style meets all the requirements of a Maha Kavya of Sanskrit Litreature. MadhwaVijaya has several commentaries written on it which greatly helps the understanding of the Maha Kavya.

Vishnusahasranama

The Vishnu sahasranama (Sanskrit vishnusahasranama, a tatpurusha compound translating literally to "the thousand names of Vishnu") is a list of 1,000 names (sahasranama) of Vishnu, one of the main forms of God in Hinduism and the personal supreme God for Vaishnavas (followers of Vishnu). It is also one of the most sacred and commonly chanted stotras in Hinduism. The Vishnu sahasranama as found in the Mahabharata is the most popular version of the 1000 names of Vishnu. Another version exists in the Padma Purana and matsya purana. Each name eulogizes one of His countless great attributes.

According to the 149th chapter of Anushasanaparva in the epic Mahabharata, the names were handed down to Yudhisthira by the famous warrior Bhishma who was on his death bed at the battle of Kurukshetra. Yudhisthira asks Bhishma the following questions:[1][2]

kimekam daivatam loke
kim vapyekam paraya?am
stuvanta? kam kamarcanta? prapnuyurmanava? subham
ko dharma? sarva dharma?am bhavata? paramo mata?
kim japan mucyate jantu? janmasamsarabandhanat

In this universe who is the one Deva of all? (i.e., at whose command all beings function?, or who is God of all?. Who is the one greatest refuge for all? Who is the one Divinity by praising and by worshipping whom a man attains good? Which according to you is that highest form of Dharma (capable of bestowing salvation and prosperity on man)? What is that by uttering or reciting which any living being can attain freedom from cycle of births and deaths?
    —Verses 7:8

Bhisma answers by stating that mankind will be free from all sorrows by chanting the Vishnu sahasranama' which are the thousand names of the all-pervading Supreme Being Vishnu, who is the master of all the worlds, the supreme light, the essence of the universe and who is Brahman. All matter animate and inanimate reside in him and he in turn resides within all matter.

Dvadasha Stotra

Dvadasha stotra is a series of 12 Stotras composed by Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of the Tattvavada or Dvaita school of philosophy. 'Dvadasha' in Sanskrit means 12 and all the 12 stotras are in praise of Lord Vishnu[1]. It is believed that the stotras were composed in connection with the installation of the idol of Lord Krishna at Udupi. While most of the 12 stotras are praises of the Lord, the third stotra is actually a summary of Madhvacharya's philosophy.

There have been numerous musical compositions of Dvadasha stotras over the years. It is also a ritual to recite the Dvadasha stotras at the time of "naivedya"[2] or offering of food to God at Madhva temples.

Sri Hari Vaayustuti

Vayu Stuti is one of the most famous Stutis (poems) composed by Sri Trivikrama Panditacharya in praise of Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of the Dvaita school of philosophy. Madhvas, or the followers of Sri Madhvacharya, believe him to be an incarnation of Lord Mukhyaprana or Vayu and the Vayu Stuti has been written recognizing this belief.

Legend has it that during daily puja done by Sri Madhvacharya in the sanctum sanctorum of Udupi Sri Krishna temple behind closed doors, Trivikrama Panditacharya used to recite the Dvadasha stotra outside. The end of naivedya or ceremonial offering of food to the Lord was indicated by sounding of bells. However one day, Trivikrama Panditacharya got increasingly curious as the sound of bells was not heard even after a long time. He peeked through the door and to his utter amazement found Sri Madhva performing puja to Lord Shri Rama as Hanuman, to Lord Krishna as Bhimasena and to Lord Veda Vyasa as Madhvacharya. Overcome by Bhakti, he composed the Vayu Stuti and dedicated it to Madhvacharya.

The Vayu Stuti comprises 41 paras. It is usual practice to chant the Vayu Stuti by starting and ending it with the Narasimha Nakha Stuti, a short two-para composition by Sri Madhva in praise of Lord Narasimha. It is said that when Trivikrama Panditacharya presented his work, Sri Madhva insisted that the work should not be dedicated to his praise alone and instantly composed the Nakha Stuti and instructed that it be chanted before and after the Vayu Stuti.

The Vayu Stuti is also known as Hari Vayu Stuti

Sri Krishnastami – Krishna Jayanti – Gokulastami

Sri Krishnastami – Krishna Jayanti – Gokulastami

Shravana Bahula Astami

Why Sri Krishnarghya to be given?

If we give Arghya on Krishna astami day or on Krishna Jayanthi day, we will get the punya equal to Samarpana of samastabhoomandala as per Bhavishyottara purana.

Sri Krishastami vratha is also Haridina just like Ekadashi.

But the importance of performing one Srikrishnastami is equal to 20 crore Ekadashis.   We should not leave Krishnastami, saying that we are doing Ekadashi, and similarly we must not leave Ekadashi saying, by just doing Krishnastami we will be get all ekadashi phala.     So, we have to do both Krishnastami and Ekadashi Upavasa invariably.

Why we are giving more importance to Sri Krishnastami?   Why not Ramanavami? Buddhajayanthi? –

THERE IS NO BEDHA FOR DIFFERENT PARAMATHMA ROOPA/AVATAARA. We must not think of difference in Paramathma’s different roopa.  If we think it will be navavidha dwesha on paramathma.

Periodwise,  Sri Krishna is nearer to Kaliyuga.   Only on this day that we have to do upavasa and not on other bhagavadroopa jayanthi days.   Ofcourse Buddhavatara is more nearer to us than Krishnavatara.  Even though Buddhavatara is nearer to us, it was only for a short period and it was daitya mohaka roopa whereas Srikrishnavatara is Jnaana roopa.

What happens if we are not observing Upavasa on Krishnastami?

As per Bhavishyottara purana if we are not observing krishnastami vrata, we will become brahmarakshasa and he will born as Snake, tiger like wild animals. We will get  paapa  as if we are eating Maamsa if we not observing upavasa as per smruthi.

Ahneeka Krama –
1. Regular snaana sandhyavandana to be done
2. On Krishnastami day – Brahma Yagna not to be done
3. While doing morning snaana, we have to do with

Sri Krishna had 16108 wives.   Out of which above mentioned are  called as Krishna astamahishiyaru.

Remaining 16100 were Agniputraas born as women just to have the sannidhana and samparka of Srihari.    Sri Krishna had from each of his 16108 wives 10 male and 1 female children.

Mothers of Sri Krishna -
· Sri Krishna Paramathma had three mothers –
· All the three did the tapassu to get Krishna as their children.
· Devaki became the mother by giving birth
· Yashoda became his mother by giving breast milk
· Rohini became his mother by virtue of Sri Krishna being born in Rohini Nakshatra

What is Krishna Astami  & what is Krishna Jayanti?-

As per sampradaya, the Sri Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the day when the ashtami tithi occurs at midnight. If the ashtami tithi AND the Rohini nakshatra occur on the same day, then the observance is considered to be doubly sacred; otherwise the observance is held on the day on which the ashtami prevails at midnight.
Shravana Krishna paksha Astami  it is Krishnastami.
If on that day if there is Rohini Nakshatra it is termed as Sri Krishna Jayanti.  It is the sacred day for all as it is on this day that Sri Krishna, who is not having the Praktuta shareera,  was born as a child of Devaki.
